Te Kura learning programmes expanded to support students affected by COVID-19 disruptions
Senior secondary students impacted by disruptions due to COVID-19 can access additional support thanks to a time-limited funding boost, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced yesterday.
The additional support for Auckland NCEA students includes:
- Additional places in programmes led by Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) from Term 4, to support students most at risk of not achieving their NCEA goals in 2020;
- In partnership with the Ministry, Te Kura will have extra places in Summer School this year, for students who need up to 10 additional credits to attain an NCEA or University Entrance award;
- Students working towards an NCEA can gain up to six extra Learning Recognition (LR) Credits at Level 1 and up to four extra LR credits at Levels 2 and 3;
- The credit requirements for Certificate Endorsements have been reduced further by two credits. This means students will be awarded a certificate endorsement if they achieve 44 credits at Merit or Excellence level, instead of 46.
Te Kura Chief Executive Mike Hollings says the temporary expansion of Te Kura Big Picture and Summer School learning programmes will provide an opportunity to have a positive impact on students’ lives.
“Our learning programmes are focused on placing young people at the centre of their learning in a way that is relevant to them. Their learning is based on their needs, interests and goals.”
Te Kura is preparing for its sixth year of Summer School. Working in partnership with schools, Te Kura Summer School offers students the opportunity to achieve the NCEA credits they need to go on to further study, training, or to secure a job.
Mike Hollings says that Te Kura is looking forward to developing more partnerships with schools this year.
“We are pleased to play a part in the joint effort of the Ministry of Education and so many other educators, schools, and kura to support students and whānau affected by COVID-19.”
