Te Kura help for schools
New emergency enrolment gateways have been created to support ākonga (students) affected by COVID-19 disruptions.
Information sessions are available for schools (see below).
COVID-19 Dual tuition programme for 2021 school year
A temporary enrolment gateway to Te Kura has been opened for schools that have ākonga (students) who need additional support in one or two subjects.
Government-funded access to dual tuition is now available to support ākonga based in New Zealand whose schools are unable to provide sufficient support for their learning at home following the recent changes in alert levels.
Ākonga must be enrolled in a New Zealand school in order to access the new gateway, and eligible ākonga will remain enrolled at their school while also accessing support from Te Kura.
The programme is available to ākonga from Years 9-15 until the end of the 2021 school year. Schools can register each ākonga for up to two courses.
There are up to 2000 additional places available in this online programme.
Information sessions for schools
Te Kura has organised information sessions to help schools with queries. These sessions are being held four days a week, on the week beginning 6 September and the week beginning 13 September 2021.

Who can access this support?
All state and state-integrated schools, and private schools listed in the Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) Enrolment and Dual Tuition Policy, may register domestic ākonga in Years 9-15 who meet the following criteria:
- their enrolling school is under COVID-19 Alert Level 3 or 4 restrictions at the time of registration;
- their enrolling school is unable to provide sufficient support for them to continue their planned learning programme at home (e.g. due to technology or staffing limitations).
This gateway is not subject to the usual one-term minimum enrolment requirement associated with other dual tuition arrangements. Ākonga can enrol in Term 4 if other criteria are met.
Schools that already have access to the dual tuition programme through an existing gateway
These schools can still use existing gateways even if it is for COVID-19-related support. This will enable other schools to access this COVID-19 dual tuition gateway.
Note that the lifting of the minimum one-term requirement only applies to ākonga registered through the COVID-19 dual tuition gateway, not for other gateways.
